When you're an animagus in your animal form, there's a sort of primal rhythm to everything you do, everything you think. Your mind is still intact, rational and human, but it can easily take a back seat if you allow it, instinct slipping in to colour thoughts and actions and feelings. Of all three of them, Sirius had always been the most ready to let loose the reins of logic and consequence and give over to the animal, the most reluctant to return to human form. He's never merely played at being canine, too well-suited for a life of leaping without looking.
He doesn't think, now. He reacts.
His back is up the moment he skids to a stop, lips curled in a vicious snarl. Greyback looms over the tiny damaged body like a monolith, a black silhouette against the moonlight. He's so much bigger than Sirius, stronger. It doesn't matter.
Sirius is going to fucking kill him.
Jaws slathering, claws sunk deep in dark summer soil, Sirius jerks his head with a snap of his teeth. Daring. Challenging. Ordering with all the untempered fury of having watched one of his best friends suffer for nearly a decade.
